The creator of Lisp and arguably the father of modern artificial intelligence, John McCarthy, died today. He studied mathematics with the famous John Nash at Princeton and, notably, held the first “computer-chess” match between scientists in the US and the USSR. He transmitted the moves by telegraph.

McCarthy believed AI should be interactive, allowing for a give and take similar to AI simulators like Eliza and, more recently, Siri. His own labs were run in an open, free-wheeling fashion, encouraging exploration and argument. He won the Turing Award from the Association for Computing Machinery in 1972 and the National Medal of Science in 1991. Continue reading »

After Microsoft announced last month that Windows 8 would support the Xbox LIVE gaming and media distribution platform, a far-juicier rumor has also been gradually making the rounds: Windows 8 might be able to play Xbox 360 games. This isn’t as crazy as it might sound: Xbox 360 games, though compiled for the Xbox’s PowerPC CPU, use an API that’s very similar to DirectX. Xbox games are relatively easy to port to Windows as a result, and the idea of Windows 8 natively supporting Xbox 360 games isn’t too far-fetched at all. Continue reading »

Details about Windows 8 continue to trickle out this month as Microsoft reveals another new addition to its upcoming operating system: native support for widely used image file formats. Unlike previous Windows editions, Redmond’s latest and greatest software will be able to mount ISO and VHD files without installing third party software such as Daemon Tools or PowerISO. Samsung held a press event in New York where they announced that the upcoming Galaxy S II would be coming to AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint next month. There was no mention of a Verizon model, as they plan to focus on alternative Android devices instead. This doesn’t mean that we may never see an eerily similar smartphone eventually pop up on Verizon Wireless under a different name, however. Continue reading »

Mozilla is planning to release a Firefox browser for Android 3.0 tablets in the near future. Mozilla mobile device user experience designer Ian Barlow posted some mock-ups of the browser on his personal blog.

Firefox for Android smartphones has been available for some time now, first as a beta version and later as a full release. While that version will work on Android tablets as-is, you won’t get a rich experience doing so. Continue reading »
